Singing Stone,
University of York, 2015

An artwork located near the University’s Department of Music to commemorate Dame Janet Baker’s chancellorship of the University from 1991–2004, her career as a singer, and her continuing support of the Department of Music. The Singing Stone was also created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Department of Music.

Incorporating words from Dame Baker’s favourite poem, W.B. Yeats’s The Cloths of Heaven, the sculpture has been carved from a 7 metre long glacial granite boulder from Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. The boulder was carved and polished to the required shape and finished with sandblasted and carved lettering.
